"Freedom" of conscience.
PW Deviviers SJ COURSE Christian apologetics or reasoned exposition of the foundations of faith, p.465, 1906 wrote:
A. The so-called freedoms modern
Under this name, it typically includes freedom of conscience and of religion, freedom of the press, academic freedom and freedom of association.
freedom of conscience claims to guarantee everyone the right to profess and propagate any religion he pleases, or to profess none. It requires that no religion is privileged, even though the nation would mostly profession of Catholicism. - Freedom of the press, says the right to express through the pen, propagate through writing, any doctrine on moral, political, social and religious, so it may be tainted with impiety or immorality . Freedom-of teaching proclaims that everyone has the natural right to spread these doctrines through public education. - The freedom of association law criminalizes the ability to form any society, even secret and contrary to religion. - And note well that this is not mere tolerance, to avoid considerable pain, but a recognition of what is being said a natural right, sacred, inalienable. It is true that we made certain restrictions on the use of these freedoms, but also that they are illogical, such restrictions are hardly theoretical. In the eyes of the modern state, for example, it is not even an impiety punishable to teach publicly the non-existence of God.
B. What to make of these modern freedoms:
They are wrong in principle . Subjectively men can make mistakes in good faith and believe in conscience obliged to profess any errors they believe to be truth, but in itself objectively, the reality is or is not, she is such and such. It is scientifically true that a mind is free to think of reality what he wants, and teach this reality what he thinks. Or he is wrong or it is right one or the other. Human thought is not its purpose at its discretion, truth, duty exists independently of it. Therefore, neither thought is free, or consciousness. A physical error, mathematical, geographical or religious has, strictly speaking, no right to spread; we have, instead, the duty to respond, and if this error is harmful, to fight the spread. These principles of common sense enough to show, in theory, the freedoms in question are based on falsehood.
However, we demonstrated that the Roman Catholic Church is only real and binding on all men. itself has, by the will of God, the right of establishment, spread, to impose upon faith and obedience of all men.
It follows that no one, neither individual nor government can not legitimately deny the exclusive right of the Catholic Church, and recognize the error and evil, heresy, impiety, to immortality a natural right to exist and propagate.
